Reiki and Infertility: How Reiki Can Support Women During Fertility Treatment and IVF

Reiki and infertility: how Reiki may support women during fertility treatment and IVF by reducing stress, calming the nervous system, and offering emotional support during the fertility journey.

Last year, I wrote an article about Reiki as a complementary therapy for infertility treatment. Recently, this topic came back to me again.

As I’m writing these words, we are approaching Easter — a time that symbolizes new life, renewal, and hope. It feels like a meaningful moment to revisit this subject.

Before we go further, I want to share something personal.
I am the mother of two wonderful girls. Motherhood has been one of the most beautiful and transformative experiences in my life.

But I also know that for many women, the path toward becoming a mother is not always simple or straightforward.

Some time ago, I came across a fertility clinic that offers complementary therapies alongside medical treatment, such as acupuncture, reflexology, and Reiki. Seeing this inspired me to write about the topic again.

Perhaps you are reading this article because you are trying to conceive.
Maybe you are already in the middle of fertility treatment or IVF.
Maybe you have experienced several unsuccessful attempts, and you feel tired — physically, emotionally, and mentally.

If that is you, this article is written for you.

Trying to conceive, especially during fertility treatment, can bring a deep emotional journey. Many women experience stress, pressure, disappointment, and exhaustion along the way.

I want to say something clearly from the beginning.

I am not saying that Reiki can magically solve infertility or replace medical treatment.

But I am saying that Reiki can support women during fertility treatment by helping the body and nervous system return to a calmer, more balanced state.

And sometimes, that support can make the journey feel a little less heavy.

How Reiki Can Support Emotional Healing During IVF

Can Reiki Support Women During Fertility Treatment?

Many women going through fertility treatment or IVF describe feeling as if their bodies are constantly under pressure.

There are medical appointments, hormone injections, long waiting periods, and emotional ups and downs. Over time, this process can become physically demanding and emotionally exhausting. It is not uncommon for women to experience chronic stress, anxiety, and deep fatigue during fertility treatment.

This is where complementary practices such as Reiki for fertility support may offer gentle help.

Reiki sessions are often experienced as deeply calming. They can support women by helping them:

  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • calm the nervous system
  • reconnect with their bodies
  • create moments of stillness during an emotionally intense time

When the nervous system begins to relax, the body can move out of a constant “fight or flight” response and into a more balanced state.

It is important to say this clearly: Reiki cannot guarantee pregnancy and it does not replace medical fertility treatment.

However, many women report that Reiki helps them feel more grounded, emotionally supported, and less overwhelmed during their fertility journey.

For some, Reiki becomes a quiet pause in the middle of a demanding process — a safe moment where they can simply breathe, soften, and reconnect with themselves.

And sometimes, that moment of calm is exactly what the body and mind need the most.

Scientific Research on Reiki and Stress Reduction During Fertility Treatment

At the moment, there is very limited direct research on Reiki specifically during IVF or fertility treatment. Most of the available evidence looks at Reiki in broader healthcare settings, especially in relation to stress, anxiety, pain, and overall wellbeing rather than pregnancy outcomes themselves.

That distinction matters.

It would not be accurate to say that science has proven Reiki can improve fertility or guarantee success during IVF. At the same time, there is growing interest in how supportive practices that reduce stress and help regulate the nervous system may benefit women going through infertility treatment.

Several reviews of Reiki research have found that Reiki may help reduce anxiety and support relaxation, although the overall quality of studies is mixed and stronger clinical trials are still needed. A 2014 review of randomized clinical trials concluded that Reiki showed evidence of benefit for pain and anxiety in adults, while later reviews also noted a possible supportive role for mental health and emotional wellbeing.

There is also some physiological research suggesting that Reiki may support a parasympathetic response — the “rest and restore” state of the nervous system. In one study, Reiki was associated with changes in heart rate variability consistent with increased parasympathetic activity. This does not prove a fertility effect, but it does support the idea that Reiki may help the body move out of a prolonged stress response.

This is especially relevant during fertility treatment, because infertility and IVF are often linked with significant emotional strain. Reviews on infertility consistently describe high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and treatment-related distress, and some papers note that distress may also contribute to treatment dropout.

Research on supportive interventions in fertility care is also growing more broadly. A 2023 meta-analysis found that group psychological interventions for women undergoing fertility treatment improved several mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, fertility quality of life, and stress. That does not mean Reiki has been proven in the same way, but it supports the wider clinical idea that emotional support during fertility treatment matters

There is also evidence that many women already turn to complementary and integrative approaches during infertility treatment. A 2010 U.S. cohort study found that 29% of couples used some form of complementary or alternative medicine while seeking fertility care, and a 2025 study reported that about half of women in infertility treatment used traditional, complementary, or integrative approaches; in that study, Reiki was among the methods with high reported satisfaction.

So, what is the most honest conclusion?

Science has not established Reiki as a fertility treatment. But current research does support the broader importance of stress reduction, emotional care, and nervous system regulation during infertility treatment. Reiki may fit into that supportive space as a gentle complementary practice that helps some women feel calmer, safer, and more emotionally held during IVF or while trying to conceive.

If you are currently trying to conceive, going through fertility treatment or IVF, please know that your experience matters.

The fertility journey can bring hope, excitement, uncertainty, and sometimes deep emotional fatigue. Many women carry this process quietly, holding together appointments, treatments, and daily life while their nervous system remains in a constant state of tension.

Practices such as Reiki for fertility support are not meant to replace medical treatment. Instead, they can offer something that is often missing during this time: a moment of calm, safety, and reconnection with your own body.

Reiki is a gentle practice that supports stress reduction and nervous system regulation, helping the body shift from constant pressure into a more relaxed and balanced state.

For many women, this simple shift can create space to breathe again — emotionally and physically — during a demanding fertility journey.
